A Reading Habit That Fits a Busy Week

A reading habit that fits a busy week. Choose a cue, read a little, recall one idea, then check. Dr Zam’s Living, body, mind and soul.

A book on your desk can represent a useful intention: understand your work more deeply, explore an unfamiliar subject, or make space for an interest you keep postponing. Turning that intention into a routine means deciding where reading can realistically fit.

Start with one book or a substantial article and a small, repeatable appointment with it. The aim for the first week is to discover a workable rhythm and engage with what you read. The routine below is a practical experiment informed by research on habits and learning. It has not been tested as a complete programme, and it does not promise a particular improvement in memory or reading speed.

Choose something worth returning to

Write down one question you would like your reading to help you explore. For a professional, that might be “How could our meetings produce clearer decisions?” For personal reading, it might be “What can this story help me notice about another person’s experience?”

Choose material that speaks to that question. Keep the selection narrow enough to begin without another search. A library book, an article you already saved, or a chapter from a book you own is enough. If the material turns out to be irrelevant or unnecessarily difficult, changing it is a reasonable part of the experiment.

Give reading a reliable cue

Connect reading to something that already happens in your day. For example: “After I clear my lunch plate, I will read at the table for five minutes.” If your schedule varies, choose an event that travels with it, such as finishing your first meal after waking.

Lally and colleagues followed volunteers who repeated an eating, drinking or activity behaviour in a consistent daily context. Their self-reports generally showed increasing automaticity over time, with substantial variation between people. This was not a reading study, so applying it to books is an informed suggestion rather than a directly tested result. [1]

Five minutes is simply a starting suggestion. Choose a duration that fits your circumstances, and leave the book or saved article ready at the point where you intend to read. For a demanding text, a single paragraph may provide plenty to consider.

Pause to recall one idea

After reading a short section, close the book or look away from the screen. Try explaining one idea in your own words. You can say it aloud, write a sentence, or make a brief voice note. Then return to the text and check: what did you get right, leave out, or misunderstand?

In experiments by Roediger and Karpicke, university students who practised recalling prose retained more on tests after two days or a week than students who repeatedly studied it. Repeated study did better on a test after five minutes. Those experiments used short passages and fuller recall tasks, without feedback; they did not test this one-idea routine. [2]

The checking step here is a practical accuracy check. Keep your note provisional until you have compared it with the source. If you cannot explain the idea yet, mark the confusing sentence and revisit it. For a novel or poem, you may prefer to recall an event, image, or question without treating every reading session as a test.

Make room for body mind and soul

Dr Zam’s Living approaches everyday growth through body, mind and soul. For this reading experiment, use those themes as practical prompts.

Body: choose a comfortable setting and a session that fits alongside rest and your other responsibilities. Mind: give one passage your attention, then check your understanding. Soul: ask how the reading connects with your values, relationships, curiosity, or sense of meaning. These are reflective prompts, not scientific claims that this routine changes all three areas.

For example, after reading about listening, you might decide to ask one clarifying question in your next conversation. After reading a history chapter, you might note a perspective you had not considered. Treat an idea from a book as something to examine, especially before applying it to a consequential decision.

Try it for a week and adjust

Before the next session, complete this sentence: “After ___, I will read ___ for ___.” Choose one cue, one text, and a manageable amount of time.

For seven days, make a brief note of whether you began, what idea or question stayed with you, and what got in the way. If you miss a session, return at the next suitable opportunity. In Lally’s study, missing one opportunity did not materially disrupt the modelled habit-formation process; that finding does not establish how repeated interruptions affect every routine. [1]

At the end of the week, review the practical fit. Was the cue reliable? Was the reading accessible and worthwhile? Did your recall note match the text? Keep what worked and change one obstacle, such as the timing, session length, or material.

Seven days gives you an initial check on the routine’s fit. It is not a deadline for forming a habit. Choose your next reading session now, with enough room to begin again when life interrupts.

Mastering Growth: How to Improve Personal and Professional Development Skills

Mastering Growth: How to Improve Personal and Professional Development Skills

In the fast-paced world of life and work, continual learning stands as a foundation stone, a constant that festers personal life and professional career growth. As fluency in the language of personal and professional development becomes ever-pertinent, it’s crucial to discover how to improve personal and professional development skills. This article sheds light on the myriad ways you can enhance your growth trajectory in both spheres of your life.

  1. Set Clear Goals

The first step to improving your personal and professional development skills is by setting clear, achievable goals. Whether it’s cultivating a new habit, learning a new language, or acquiring a vital professional skill, progress begins by knowing where you want to be. Document your goals and identify key steps towards achieving them.

  1. Embrace Lifelong Learning

In the age of information, knowledge is your most powerful tool. Welcoming a culture of lifelong learning is an excellent way to improve personal and professional development skills. Expand your horizons by taking online courses, reading books, attending workshops, or engaging in other educational activities that interest you.

  1. Effective Time Management

The principle of effective time management underpins professional efficiency and success. Develop a habit of prioritizing tasks, focusing on high-impact activities, and eliminating distractions. Time management tools and apps can assist in streamlining this process.

  1. Seek Feedback and Constructive Criticism

There’s no better mirror for your growth than the perspective of others who observe your efforts, particularly in a professional setting. Constructive feedback can highlight areas of improvement and validate the areas in which you excel. Remember, the goal is to grow, often requiring a shift from your comfort zone.

  1. Practice Emotional Intelligence

Understanding and managing emotions (yours and others) is a cornerstone of personal growth and professional success. Emotional intelligence helps foster healthier relationships, insightful decision-making, and a positive work environment, thus significantly aiding your development.

  1. Adopt a Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset profoundly impacts personal and professional development. People with a growth mindset view challenges as opportunities for advancement and understand that effort paves the path to mastery. Embrace imperfections as learning opportunities and focus on the process over the end results.

  1. Network and Build Relationships

The adage “no man is an island” holds true for personal and professional growth. By networking and building meaningful relationships, you open doors to new opportunities, gain diverse insights and foster a culture of collaboration and mutual growth.

  1. Prioritize Health and Well-being

Remember, personal and professional development is a marathon, not a sprint. Prioritizing mental and physical well-being ensures you have the strength and resilience to face challenges and pursue your goals relentlessly.

In conclusion, the journey to improving personal and professional development skills is an ongoing process that is unique for each individual. However, these actionable steps provide a universally applicable roadmap to growth, equipping you with the tools and strategies you need to excel.
